Have you ever been to a craft or street festival and stumbled upon a vendor selling cute and trendy fashionable t-shirts? No matter what time of the year, these vendors offer seasonal t-shirt and sweatshirt designs.

If you ever thought about starting your own clothing business and want to start making money by offering printed graphic t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags and more, you need to know how the professionals source their graphic designs.

There are several places to find great artwork, but many of them require a subscription for the service. If you’re just starting out, you need to stretch your business investment as much as possible. Many of the subscription services, such as Shutterstock.com,  have strict rules regarding licensing of the artwork.  You have to read the fine print to understand if the license allows you to use the graphic as it is for printed t-shirts and other items.

If you’re looking for T-shirts, sweatshirt or designs for sublimated mugs, I have found the best sources for thousands and thousands of ready to print designs can be found on Etsy.com.

You might think, Etsy? Etsy is a global online reseller of thousands of hand made and unique items. Many people sell printed t-shirts on Etsy, but it’s also a great source to find nearly any graphic for any subject matter you can think of.

The key word you want to search should end with .SVG or .PNG.  You can search broad term words such as Fall SVG or PNG, or Halloween SVG or PNG. This search returned 115,353 items for sale.

Etsy search for “Fall SVG” returned 115,353 items for sale.

Etsy Search Result for “Fall SVG”

There are designs for all seasons and holidays as well as nearly anything you can think of.  I wanted to test this to see, so I did a search on “Web Developer SVG”, I thought maybe I might find a dozen or so, but I was surprised to find nearly 1,680 unique print ready designs.

This left me wondering, how many print ready t-shirt designs can I find on Etsy?  I was curious, so I entered SVG designs. The search result was 777,335 items for sale. So you may be wondering, how much do these designs cost?  You may be surprised to find out the average cost for a print ready SVG file is under $3.00.

Etsy is no doubt a good source to find Cheap T-Shirt graphics, but there are a few things to be careful about when choosing a design. One of the most common problems are copyright issues. Etsy does a pretty good job of screening licensed designs, but some designs contain specific language which limits the use of certain graphics for “home use”. Things like Disney’s Mickey Mouse may be used to create a craft item, but use for a T-shirt may be strictly forbidden.  It’s important to understand this so you don’t end up defending a copyright infringement.

Another thing to consider when downloading an art file is knowing how to resize it for T-Shirts. Because many online sellers are hosting their artwork on their own servers, they typically make the artwork very small.  Many of them are only 2”x 2”. This is not usually a problem as long as you have graphic software which can resize the file. If the artwork you like is in a PNG format, be careful the file is not a low resolution file. To print a PNG file, it must be at least 300 pixels per inch or “PPI”. If you download something which is 2” x 2” at 72 PPI, it will not print clearly when it’s enlarged to a full sized adult print.

Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before you begin shopping for T-Shirt artwork.

  1. What type of Niche artwork do I want to sell?
  2. How many designs do I need to get started?
  3. Do you want to sell 1 color designs or multi-colored?
  4. Do you want to sell Adult t-shirts, or Childrens?
  5. Do you know how to use a Graphic Design program such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or Canva?

Once you’ve answered some of these questions, you will have a better idea which direction to begin looking in your search to find awesome t-shirt artwork, cheap!
